Father Nick is the chaplain to the St. Benedict Institute at Hope College. He received a BA in economics and philosophy at Claremont McKenna College in 2006. He joined the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 2006, received a masters in Divinity and Theology at Aquinas Institute of Theology (St. Louis) in 2013, and became ordained as a Catholic priest in 2013. His talk's title is "Why searching for religion can help your mental health."
He wanted to become a part of TEDxHopeCollege Speaker team partly because Therese [website manager] encouraged him, but mostly because the more he thought about it, the more he believed he could help people and had something to say.
TED and TEDx inspires him because he believes the search for truth is always inspiring. For Father Nick, our theme turning the tables is when "reality makes more sense when we look at it upside down...which then turns out to be right side up." He is most excited for the moment he finishes his speech and knowing that nothing went horribly wrong.
Father Nick's biggest irrational fear would be failure [which isn't very irrational]. He told us that he would let us know what his invention is AFTER he patents it. He is most proud of saying "yes" to God when it's been most difficult for him. Something that he cannot live without is, of course, God. Finally, Father Nick is a big Harry Potter fan, so if you are looking to give him a present, buy him a wand.
